Injectable PrEP as an Alternative
With advancements in the growing needs of patients, come advancements in medicine options. At San Fernando Community Health Center’s HIV prevention department: LaVida Care, our mission is to end the HIV epidemic one patient at a time. Oral pills, such as Truvada and Descovy, have been the only type of medication used for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) until most recently when the FDA approved Apretude as the first long-acting injectable option for PrEP in December of 2021.
Injectable PrEP is administered every two months and has proven to protect against HIV as much as oral PrEP. Patient’s that have difficulty adhering to daily pills will greatly benefit from this alternative option. Worried about the price tag? Various insurance plans may cover the cost of the medication or you may be easily approved for $0 co-pay through ViiV Connect’s patient assistance program.
With the San Fernando Community Health Center being right in your neighborhood, it is easier now more than ever to help end the HIV epidemic. At SFCHC’s: LaVida Care, we pride ourselves in financially helping our patients to the fullest extent, whether they can pay or not, through assistance programs and other alternatives that may be available. We are a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) where meeting the healthcare needs of our underserved community is top priority. For those uninsured, we offer the PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP) that covers the costs of their PrEP care, visits, lab work and medication, all at no expense. Our care coordinator and test counselor will always be available during clinic hours through a simple call at (818) 963-5690, ext 177. Or, see below to have our Care Coordinator contact you.
